The main purpose of the cooperation is to support the regional development process.

The main purpose of the cooperation of South Savo Regional Council is to support the regional development process. The international cooperation of the Regional Council focuses on the Cross-Border Cooperation (CBC), which is where its most important partners also come from.

South-East Finland – Russia CBC

South-East Finland – Russia CBC contribute to economic and social development, growth and well-being of the regions and their inhabitants, mitigate common challenges and promote mobility among actors of regional relevance. The programme core region consists of South Karelia, South-Savo and Kymenlaakso in Finland and St. Petersburg and Leningrad region in Russia. The total budget of the programme is 77,5 million euros.

East and North Finland Eu Office in Brussels

The East and North Finland EU office represents the interest of the regions of Central Ostrobothnia, Kainuu, Lapland, North Karelia, Northern Ostrobothnia, North Savo and South Savo in Brussels. In close collaboration with the regional councils the Brussels office aims to improve the competitiveness and conditions of the businesses throughout the East and North of Finland. 

The Brussels office closely follows the developments in EU policies relevant to East and North Finland and aims to influence them. Focus areas are regional policy, research, development and innovation policies, transport and energypolicies, external relations, demographic challenges, industrial policies and international co-operation between the regions.

Northern Sparsely Populated Areas

The Regional Council supports Interreg programmes and develops EU projects. It is also a member of European organizations and networks such as the Northern Sparsely Populated Areas (NSPA).

Sister City Shaoxing

The Council has signed bilateral cooperation agreement with the Shaoxing Region in China. It is the cooperation partner furthest away geographically.

Europe Direct

Who We Are

EUROPE DIRECT in Mikkeli is member of the Europe Direct network in Finland, which in turn is part of a Europe-wide family of centres. The centres make Europe accessible to people on the ground and get them engage in debates on the future of the EU. The network is managed by the European Commission.

You can contact us with questions about the EU policies, programmes and priorities and engage in events on the future of the EU.

We also go to schools, where we make presentations, run discussions about the EU and provide official publications.
